Microblading vs Powder vs Combo Brows: Which Is Right for You?

Hi again — it's Pui from N&Beauty. So many of you ask me the same question at the very start of a consultation: 'Which one is right for me — microblading, powder, or the mix?' I want to walk you through it honestly, the same way I would if we were sitting together in the studio.

The three techniques

At a glance

Microblading

This is where I use a fine, pen-like blade to draw each hair stroke one by one, so the line looks like real brow hair. It's the most popular technique I do, and I love it for clients who like to leave the house with a bare face — it just makes your own brows look a little fuller. A close cousin is hairstroke done by machine, placing tiny dots instead of blade lines — it takes longer on the bed, so I only do it on request rather than as a regular option.

Powder (Ombré)

Powder is very common here in Thailand, but I'll be honest — done carelessly, it can end up looking like brows filled in with a pen, which isn't what anyone wants. When I do it well, I build a soft gradient and adjust the color density to your bone structure and face shape, so it reads like your everyday brow makeup rather than a tattoo. If your natural brow hair is quite sparse, Powder alone can still look a little 'drawn on' — so I don't always recommend it by itself.

Combo (Mix)

This is microblading and powder done together in one session — hair strokes fill in the sparser areas, and gentle shading gives it depth, so the whole brow looks fuller and more three-dimensional. I often suggest this to clients who are only in Bangkok once, because the color tends to hold better after just a single visit.

It starts with your lifestyle, not a trend

Before we even talk about technique, I always ask: do you wear makeup every day, or do you prefer to go bare-faced? That one question tells me more than any photo you bring me.

If you fill in your brows every morning anyway, Powder tends to make your life easier — it's really about giving you back a few minutes each day. If you love the feeling of a bare face, Microblading usually feels more like you, because it mimics real hair rather than a filled-in shape.

Please don't assume Powder is always the 'safe' pick

A lot of people walk in assuming Powder is the modern, foolproof choice because it's everywhere in Bangkok right now. I want to be honest with you — it's only as good as the hands doing it. Done without care, it turns into brows that look painted rather than grown.

And if your natural brow hair is quite sparse, Powder by itself can still look a little flat or 'drawn.' In that case I'll usually talk to you about the combination instead, rather than push Powder just because it's popular.

When I suggest the combination

If you're visiting Bangkok and this is likely your only session for a long while, I often lean toward the combo. Because it layers hair strokes with soft shading, the color tends to hold its shape and depth longer from a single treatment — which matters if a touch-up flight back isn't realistic for you.

It also gives a nice in-between look: natural texture where you need it, a little more definition where your brows are thinner.

An honest note about Microblading and that first quiet week

I'll tell you something clients don't always expect: Microblading often looks its softest — sometimes its lightest — a few weeks in, once the initial color has settled. A few people feel a little let down at first, wondering if it 'disappeared' too fast.

Please don't judge it too early. This is exactly why I build in touch-ups — together we adjust the shape a little more each time, until we land on the version you love most. Nothing is ever decided in a single sitting.

Questions

A few questions I'm often asked

Powder (Ombré) usually suits you best, since it's designed to look like your everyday makeup rather than bare skin. It can genuinely give you back time in the morning — that's really the point of it for someone like you.

Very likely, yes. Microblading mimics real hair strokes, so it tends to look most like 'you' on a bare face. Just know it may look softer than you expect in the first weeks — that's normal, and we refine it together at your touch-up.

I'll be honest with you — Powder alone can sometimes look a little flat when there's very little natural hair underneath it. In that situation I usually recommend the combination instead, so we get texture as well as shading.

If a return touch-up trip isn't realistic for you, the combo technique tends to hold its color and shape best after just one session, since it layers hair strokes with soft shading.

Whichever technique we end up choosing, I never want you to feel like I steered you into it. Your face, your lifestyle, and how you like to look every morning matter far more to me than which technique is trending. We'll talk through your shape, your color, and your technique one by one, together, until it feels unmistakably like you. — Pui, Lead Artist, N&Beauty
